A museum like no other
Archaeological Museum of Mykonos
It is perhaps testament to the disadvantageous archaeological position of Mykonos in the face of its wealthy neighbour that one of the first island museums ever to be built in the Greek state would be dedicated not to finds from its hinterland but to ones primarily from across the sea. Indeed, the Archaeological Museum of Mykonos was completed at the beginning of the previous century in order to house finds from the nearby islet of Rheneia, also known as the necropolis of the Delians. There never was a question that Delos would not have its own museum in situ, which is, incidentally, currently closed for another extensive refurbishment. Its necropolis, on the now uninhabited island of Rheneia, however, was another story.
