Our Lady of the Side Gate
Panaghia Paraportiani
On a recent count, there are about 420 churches over the island of Mykonos, with sixty located in Chora and eleven within the Kasto area alone. None of those is monumental. Most are small, whitewashed structures, typically the size of a Mykonian house. Panaghia Paraportiani is a complex made up of five individual churches: the ground-level small churches of St Sozon, St Anargyroi, St Eustathios and St Anastasia, and the raised Panaghia Paraportiani. The latter derives its name from its proximity to a side entrance (paraporti) in the fortification walls of the Kastro. It is very possible that the original structure was a fortification tower. Two giant apses supporting the roof of the Panaghia may have been parts of that tower.
