It is said that this neighbourhood derives its name from the foam of the waves as they crash on the walls of these quaint houses built right at the water's edge. The houses provided direct access to the sea through basement doors that opened at sea level. Its nickname, Little Venice, is a little less hard to decipher, as these sea captain and merchant houses bear the hallmarks of Venetian waterside architecture with their wooden balconies and multi-coloured detailing.
