A new royal palace
National Palace of Sintra
The second Islamic fortress in Sintra was located farther from the Moorish Castle, in the town itself, and is also described as a castle. This was the official residence of the walis. Upon conquering the city, Afonso Henriques donated many of the city's properties to his inner circle, but reserved the Palace of the walis for the crown. This changed during the 1383-1385 Crisis, which risked an unwanted unification of Portugal with Spain, resulting in John I of Avis being acclaimed king. D. Henrique de Vilhena, the city's alcaide, or governor, supported Castille. During the siege of Lisbon, Sintra became a stronghold for the Castilians, but following the Portuguese victory in Aljubarrota, it surrendered. John I donated the palace to the alcaide in the hope of luring him to his cause, but the governor would betray the king again. The Palace was then repossessed by the crown, and would function as a secondary residence of the king for centuries.
