Sintra, a fashionable destination
Lawrence's Hotel
If, during the Baroque and Neoclassical eras, Sintra was forgotten, its popularity rose again in the mid-eighteenth century. This time, its new visitors didn't come from Lisbon alone - they came from all over the world. Sintra not only provided the perfect backdrop for English Romantic poets, but in the beginning of the nineteenth century, it formed a country escape from the devastating Peninsular and Civil Wars. At the turn of the century, Sintra's popularity was unmatched. A number of luxury Hotels appear, symptomatic of not just the increased international interest, but of the simple notion that Sintra has become a fashionable place to spend a summer in. Three Hotels dominate the scene: Hotel Nunes (today Hotel Tivoli Sintra, next to the National Palace), Hotel Victor (located in Largo Ferreira de Castro, partly abandoned, partly used as a café and shops) and, finally, the most luxurious of all and the one that appeared in so many literary works: Lawrence's Hotel.
