The Phaestos Disk
Theodoulos
The creative practice of artist Theodoulos (b.1956) focuses on the juxtaposition of primitive and advanced materials for the creation of new concepts. With particular interest in the imprint of each era on the human memory, Theodoulos cultivates the levels of time in his work and considers that the form changes through time in order to survive. “The Phaestos Disk” (1990), presented at the 2nd Art Symposium (1990), an archeological finding of great importance to the history of Crete and humanity, is transformed and obtains new essence. The Phaistos disc captured the imagination of many archaeologists and urged their attempts to decipher the written code on it. Unique within the artistic course of Theodoulos, this piece seems like a primitive structure with shapely forms and shapes in geometric balance. However, the invisible interaction of the piece with the surrounding space and the reflection of the sky emit a tremendous energy. Thusly, the installation become a mental passageway which channels cosmic energy to the viewer, the same way the ancient disk might have done.
