Image in the Matter and Addition
Rena Papaspyrou
The material of visual artist Rena Papaspyrou (b.1938) is the past and its depiction on matter. Centering on unconventional surfaces and detached sections from walls of old buildings, she creates conceptual pieces. which emphasize the existing formations-forms of surfaces. With the addition of various materials the artist reexamines the notion of space reaffirming its visual material substance. “Image in the Matter and Addition” (1990), from the 2nd Art Symposium (1990), embodies this creative idiom. Here, a new wall integrates a piece of an old wall into a harmonious coexistence, the same way the past is integrated into a human personality on the road to evolution. Thus, the memories of the old wall are revived and resurrected in a new environment, creating new relations with the space and, over time, acquiring new history.
