Cerchio
Lucilla Catania
Lucilla Catania (b.1955) is a unique case of the contemporary arts. She ignores the ephemeral tendencies of art and chooses to create the contemporary in a traditional manner. She sculpts with traditional materials (stone, marble, wood, clay) using a hammer and chisel. Her piece “Cerchio” (1990), which was presented at the 2nd Art Symposium (1990), is based on simple forms which characterize the intensely subtractive identity of Catania’s work. The title, which translates as ‘circle’, is indicative of the ancient concepts the piece encompasses, as well as a Spartan sparingness which captivates the imagination both the artist and the viewer. A symbol of life and nature, the circle is to Catania the ultimate form which embodies the purity in art and life that the artist herself advocates.
