Offering to Poseidon
Cecilia Campos
The work of Chilean sculptress Cecilia Campos (b.1947), which has been awarded and presented mainly in Chile, has a purely anthropocentric character, conceptually and morphologically. The human and biomorphic figures of her sculptures derive mainly from history. In “Offering to Poseidon” (1999), presented at the exhibition “Chilean Art Travels to Crete” (1999), Campos is inspired by ancient Greek mythology and creates a minimalist work whose symmetrical shape resembles the trident of Poseidon. Placed on a pedestal, reminiscent of an altar, the marble object becomes an offering to the god of the sea, which is inextricably linked to the history of Greece and of the artist’s homeland, Chile.
