Minotaur
Frosso Michalea
“Minotaur” (1970) by the artist Frosso Michalea (1936-2001) is a characteristic example of her sculptural practice. With particular interest in morphology and abstract forms with references to prehistoric Greek sculpture, Michalea creates subtractive sculptures based on geometric shapes and materials such as limestone, metal and wood. Here, the Minotaur, a symbol of the history of Crete, is represented by a solid rectangular stone with a strict structure and internal discipline. As in all of her sculptural works, Michalea is trying to mix life with art and create a symbolic work, inextricably linked to the history of this place.
