Self-defined horizon
Costas Varotsos
Through his sculpture, visual artist Costas Varotsos (b.1955) emphasizes the directly visible space, the shape and the content in order to broaden the aesthetic experience of the viewer without any descriptive mood. “Self-Defined Horizon” (1990), presented at the 2nd Art Symposium (1990), is an excellent example of Varotsos’s sculptural practice, which centers around the use of glass, a material which represents light. Varotsos approaches the earth, the sky and the sea with a great strength of freedom in works for the public space. The viewer faces a puzzle without enigmatic concepts, as he is invited to view the landscape in dialogue with the sculpture.. Thus, the dreamy mood and aesthetic integration both become the core of the project.
