Guardian of our space
Maria Loizidou
Visual artist Maria Loizidou (b.1958), in a poetic mood, creates forms which resemble dreams or memories and lead to existential questions, often referencing mythical symbols. Her art often echoes her familiarity with psychoanalysis and the lived experience of recent Cypriot history. It combines the finesse of design and lightness of materials with the robustness of the composition and her assertive relationship with architectural space. “Guardian of Our Space” (1996), from the exhibition “Riches of Cyprus” (1996), is characteristic of Loizidou’s artistic creation. The artist creates here an everyday image, interwoven with the role of woman, in which she incorporates objects with distinct reference to the ancient Greek history and the role of man. Thus, this piece becomes a record of the relationship between the two genders but, with an ironic mood, it refers to their socially shaped identity as well.
