Matter and Time
Nikos Kouroussis
The personal expressive idiom of Cypriot artist Nikos Kouroussis (b.1937) is especially rich, due to the variety of techniques and artistic means he uses. For the installation “Matter and Time” (1996), presented at the exhibition “Riches of Cyprus” (1996), the artist drew inspiration from the Greek cultural heritage and elements of nature. Matter and time, two concepts commonly found in Kouroussis’ work, are two elements which constantly interact and thanks to which evolution and life exist. Wanting to emphasize the nuances of this relationship, the artist, using materials inherently connected to Greek history, such as marble, created a piece whose form changes over time through natural erosion.
