Cube
Yiannis Parmakelis
In the summer of 2006, the exhibition of sculptor Yiannis Parmakelis (b.1932), entitled “Mechanics 1978-2006”, part of which was the piece “Cube” (2006), was presented. The work is a prominent example of the practice of sculpting followed by Parmakelis after 1978 and is based on a new iconographic vocabulary based on geometry, constructivist compositions, impeccable perfection and harmony with the surrounding space. His subject matter is broad, with particular preference for being and morphoplastic vocabulary. Here, the cube, one of the five solids of Plato, due to its geometry is considered to represent the earth, according to alchemists. Furthermore, the choice of wood as a material, although rare for Parmakelis who usually works with metal, emphasizes the relationship of this piece with the land and nature.
