São Bento Railway Station
São Bento means Saint Benedict. The only thing left of the Benedictine Convent of São Bento da Avé Maria, dated to 1518, which existed in this place for many years, is the name of the saint to whom it was dedicated. By the 19th century, the monastery had fallen in disrepair after a decree by the politician Joacquin de António Aguiar, who wanted to banish all religious orders. In 1888, the construction of a new railway station was decided, shortly after the last nun's death. When she died in 1892, the building was soon demolished, giving its place to one of the most beautiful stations in the world. Legend has it that, to this day, on some nights it is still possible to hear the convent's last nun praying if you go around the station. Spooky...
