Religion in Florence
Santa Maria del Fiore Cathedral | Duomo
The people of Florence were deeply influenced by Christianity, even though atheism, agnosticism, and animosity towards the clergy were also present. Monastic orders and lay brotherhoods dedicated their lives to prayer and charity. Saint Francis of Assisi, who had died in 1226, influenced the Florentines deeply. Their religiosity found expression in wonderful works of art and monuments such as the Florence cathedral.
