A blessing and a curse
Arno river
Florence was built on a site chosen by the Romans for strategic reasons. The Arno River served as a natural moat. During the Renaissance the people of Florence approached the river with numerous revolutionary ideas, including Brunelleschi’s plan regarding the Santo Spirito square. Despite the great benefits that Florence ripped from the river, the Arno remained untamed and dangerous.
