A Point of Arrival
Clifford Pier
As the name suggests, Clifford Pier once served Singapore as a point of a arrival and departure for many travellers. Small bumboats would ferry passengers from large ships waiting in the Singapore Straits to the pier and back again, making it a bustling and busy location. After its opening in 1933, daily commuters, migrants and even dignitaries passed through this pier. Walking around the building, you may see the landing steps where passengers would board and disembark from these small bumboats. A key feature of the pier was its red lanterns that are still on display today. These lanterns helped sailors identify the pier on any given day, rain or shine.
