God has willed it
Fort of St. Andreas
There is a stone inscription above the monument to the Greek war dead in the southeast bastion. The inscription carries the Arabic phrase “Masha' Allah” and the Islamic date 1223. The English translation of the phrase is "God has willed it" while the date refers to the year 1808. It is probable that it commemorates extensive construction work that took place, on the orders of Ali Pasha, in 1807-1808. The fort was reinforced with new stones, the moat was widened and the bastions were improved. The workers received only a piece of bread. Petros from Korytsa, Ali Pasha’s chief architect for many years, supervised the work, as well as numerous other defensive projects.
