End of an era
Fort of St. Andreas
On October 12, 1912 the Greek army arrived in Filippiada, a town north of Preveza, where it established its headquarters and its supply center. On October 20 the army moved south and clashed with the Ottoman defenders in Nicopolis. The Greek victory meant that Preveza was effectively surrounded. The Ottoman military commander was determined to fight to the bitter end, but he was overruled and on the 21st the Greeks marched into the city without a shot being fired. The surrender of the Turkish army and the arrival of the Greek soldiers in the fort of St. Andreas signalled the end of the centuries-long Ottoman occupation.
