Virgin Mary of Preveza
Panagia ton Xenon
The icon of the Virgin Mary of Preveza is a modern copy of an icon in the Roman Catholic church of Saint Nicholas in Argostoli, Cephalonia. According to tradition, sometime in the 1500s, a ship captained by an orthodox Christian passed by the floating icon near Preveza but the captain failed to save the picture. Later on a Roman Catholic captain retrieved the icon and placed it in the church of Saint Nicholas. The local bishop demanded that the picture be placed at the Orthodox Church but the following morning the icon was back in the Catholic Church, where it remained as it refused to forgive the Orthodox captain’s negligence.
