A light in the dark
The lighthouse
Preveza became an important transit center in northwest Greece following its liberation in 1912. The needs of the merchant marine led to the installation of a beacon from the Swedish company AGA in 1929. It operated with acetylene, a cheap and safe gas that did not require expensive installations or the presence of a lighthouse keeper. The light was visible to a distance of 5.5 kilometers. In the 1960s the beacon was lost during the harbour’s renovation and expansion. A replica was installed in 1998.
