Venice time
Venetian Clock Tower
The clock tower is 17 meters tall and was built in 1752. The ground floor consists of a single room where an old watch repair shop used to be. Right above it is a Venetian sun dial carved in stone. Higher still is the clock mechanism and the dials. Bells occupy the top floor. They strike once to indicate the half hour and many times to indicate the time of the day. The bells are audible to a distance of two kilometers. The clock tower is part of an extensive public works project (fountains, squares, towers) built by the Venetians in their colonies to promote the power and the glory of the Most Serene Republic.
