The patron-saint of Preveza
Venetian Clock Tower
There were 14 Orthodox and Roman Catholic churches in Venetian Preveza. Most notable among them was the basilica of St. Charalambos, the town’s patron-saint. The church was built in two years (1715-1717) to replace an older building. The decoration consists of oil paintings on large canvas, clearly influenced by European religious paintings. The carved altar and the pulpit were created by an artist from Epirus in 1827. The bell tower was destroyed in the 1948 earthquake. The bells were transferred to the neighbouring Venetian clock tower with the addition of a cement superstructure that protects the bells.
