Who was Garibaldi?
Piazza Garibaldi
The statue was made by the artist Ettore Ferrari in 1892 and honours Giuseppe Garibaldi. It is decorated at its base with bronze bas-reliefs representing salient moments in his life and, in particular, his arrival in Pisa after the injury in Aspromonte. Born in 1807, Garibaldi was a general, a patriot and a republican, and is among the protagonists of the Italian war of independence against the Austrian Empire, and the unification of Italy under the royal house of Savoy. Due to his military expeditions not only in Italy, but also in Brazil, Argentina and Peru, he is known as the “hero of the two worlds”. His achievements inspired Abraham Lincoln to join the Unionists and fight alongside them in the US Civil War.
