Heading towards the Renaissance
Piazza dei Miracoli
Constructed between 1152 and 1394, the Baptistery, dedicated to Saint John the Baptist, is not only the largest baptistery in Italy but is also famous for its acoustics. The original designs were made by Diotisalvi, a Pisan architect who supervised the construction works from 1152 to 1180. The sculptor Nicola Pisano, along with his son Giovanni, were responsible for the extraordinary design of the Baptistery. The Pisanos added the upper part and the dome, while Nicola designed the pulpit, famous for the naturalistic arrangement of the figures and its Nativity scene. The innovations of Nicola and Giovanni Pisano are considered as the first chapter of the nascent Renaissance style in sculpture.
