Heavenly Garden
Kostas Karyotakis' statue
On July 21st, 1928 Karyotakis visited the “Heavenly garden” coffee-shop near a spot called Vrysoula, across from today’s General Hospital in Preveza. He enjoyed a sour cherry drink, smoked a cigarette, and requested a piece of paper where he jotted down his last note. He left 75 drachmas for the drink, way more than the regular price of 5 drachmas. He walked 400 yards north of the coffee-shop and shot himself in the heart in the shade of a eucalyptus tree at 4.30 pm. A police photograph immortalized the death scene with the poet lying on the ground, his head resting on a straw hat and his arms folded across his stomach.
