The drawings which saved the Parthenon
Athens of 1674
Carrey’s drawings allowed the proper restoration of the sculptures, after the disaster caused by Morozini (1687) and the Earl of Elgin (1801-1805). Along with the drawing of an unknown Italian artist, which dates back in 1670, they are the only faithful portrayals of Athens with the Parthenon intact, since all the older portrayals were imaginary, that is to say they weren’t based on on-the-spot observation and portrayal but on descriptions from written sources.
