Sleeping quarters fit for a king
Fit for a King (or two)
The selection of the location for the new palace was a complicated business because it affected land values. Many architects floated various ideas (including the Acropolis and Piraeus) that were ultimately rejected. A popular tradition claimed that the Bavarians identified the best location by leaving pieces of meat in various spots around the city to see where it remained fresh the longest. A similar version asserted that Bavarian soldiers slept in the open in different locations throughout Athens. The palace was built in the area where they woke up most refreshed and rested. In fact, the location was selected by Ludwig I based on the medical reports he ordered from his royal physicians.
