The importance of the work
Athens of 1674
This is the first and biggest in size oil painting that was ever made for Athens (2,6 x 5,2 m), with the Parthenon intact, as well as one of two portrayals with the whole monument before its destruction by Francesco Morosini’s bombardment in 1687, which have been preserved to the present day. The second portrayal is a drawing kept in the Civico Museum in Bassano, Italy.
