The church history
Santa Maria del Carmine Basilica
The Carmelite church was built from 1268 as part of convent, which is still existing today. The complex was enlarged a first time in 1328 and again in 1464, but in the 16th-17th centuries the church was completely renovate following the Baroque style. In 1771 a fire damaged the building and it was rebuilt internally in the Rococo style ten year later. The façade, like in many Florentine churches, remained unfinished. Inside there is a single-nave with transept and a dome on the crossing. The long nave is flanked by chapels and enclosed by a vault with frescoes of the Ascension and Transfiguration of Christ by Romei.
