The emblematic temple of Negreponte
Church of St. Paraskevi
The position of this Byzantine city/castle is marked today by the medieval aisled basilica of Agia Paraskevi. The “Great and ungainly” temple as described by Alexandros Papadiamantis in the book “The Murderess”, embodies 15 centuries of history. A Frankish creation, it preserves a faint impression of the Early Christian years, simultaneously recording the indelible traces of the Franks and the Ottomans, as well as the two earthquakes in 1854 and 1884.
