A fortress for the Straits of Evripos
Karababa Castle
In a strategic location, on the top of a hill overlooking the straits of Evripos and the whole surrounding area, the castle was constructed in 1684 by the Turks. It took its name from the Sultan Karababas buried there. It consists of four bastions, two gates and a water reservoir, with the west bastion devoted to a small but rather important exhibition of sculpture. With a clear chronological distinction of the Early Christian, Middle Byzantine, Frankish and Ottoman periods, the collection includes simple architectural parts, embossed architectural decorations from religious and secular buildings, inscriptions, coats of arms and anaglyphic - or embossed - tomb decorations.
