The core of the ancient city
Temple of Apollo Dafniphoros
According to Homer, Apollo, the god of light and music, while seeking a location for his oracle, passed through the Lelantine plain, illuminating it with his presence. The Doric peristyle temple, erected in his honor, outlined the religious center of ancient Eretria. The fragments of its sculptural decoration, Amazons, Gods, heroes and giants, show us the beginnings of the rules of archaic art. At the same time the temple defines the new style which will characterize classical plasticity and until today recounts the prayers of the followers who knelt within its limits.
