The echo of democracy
Ancient Theater of Eretria
An impressive reverberation of the past, the theatre of Eretria, spreads out over the western part of the ancient city, next to the temple of Dionysus. At its proud peak, in the 4th Cent. B.C., it held about 6.300 spectators in its seats. It stood out so much because of the artificial hill where the auditorium is positioned. The same applies to what is known as the ‘chaironeian ladder’, the underground domed passage from where the lords and the inhabitants of the underworld made their appearance into the orchestra.
