Mountain Jews
Synagogue of Mountain Jews
The Mountain Jews are believed to have lived in present-day Azerbaijan for millennia, having migrated north from Persia. They speak a unique language, Juhuri, which is strongly influenced by Persian. In the mid-18th century they established their own settlement in Guba, Red Village, whose population is still entirely Mountain Jewish. During the Oil Boom of the late 19th century, some migrated to Baku for work and a small community remains here.
