In the centre of Baku nearly every building has a plaque commemorating an important person who once lived in that building. Often a building accommodated more than one celebrity, many of whom were writers, musicians and composers – testament to Azerbaijan’s rich cultural heritage. But most are local celebrities not known outside of Baku, and many may not be even known to contemporary residents of the city. This is certainly not true in regard to Lev Landau, whose plaque adorns a magnificent building at the corner of Nizami and Samad Vurgun street.
