Wine-serving rituals
The Greeks stored and transported wines in airtight, ceramic vessels called amphorae. Amphorae were used in vast numbers for the transport and storage of liquid and dry products, but mostly for wine. They also used a labeling system close to the one we have today. The amphorae had various shapes that were used to signify the city that produced and traded the particular wine. The amphorae had an inscription with the year of production. The wine-maker’s stamp was placed on one of the handles, while the local ruler’s stamp adorned the second handle.
