Wine and water do mix
Wine-serving rituals
Wine was generally cut with water. The two liquids were mixed together in a big punch bowl called a krater, from which the slaves would fill the drinker's kylix (drinking cup) with an oinochoe (jug). Some drinking vessels were quite simply decorated because of their utilitarian role and everyday use, while others carried elaborate decorations or were made from valuable materials to reflect their owners’ exalted position or for use in special circumstances.
