Drinking games
Wine-serving rituals
Ancient Greek drinking parties were not just about consuming wine and enjoying the presence of the female entertainers. There were also simple and elaborate drinking games. The most famous was a game of skill called “kottabos.” The object of the player was to cast a portion of wine left in his drinking cup, in such a way that it didn’t break bulk in its passage through the air, towards a target, namely shallow saucers floated in a basin filled with water. The competitor who sank the greatest number was considered victorious. The prize consisted of cakes or sweetmeats.
