Serving in the 777th Special Battalion as a tank commander, he was able to destroy 9 tanks and 7 armoured personnel carriers in just a few months. However, on 8 May 1992 when the city of Shusha was captured, he was shot by a sniper having climbed out of his tank to pull aside the bodies of fallen comrades. He died on the battlefield. Albert Agarunov was posthumously designated a "National Hero of Azerbaijan" in 1992 for his courage and heroism in defending Azerbaijan's territorial integrity and civilian population.
