The Winter/Weiss Family settles in Halberstadt
The Winter/Weiss Family
We start the tour with the Weiss family, who called themselves Winter and lived here in Düsterngraben.Saul Weiss, known as Winter, born 1884 and his Frida, née Goldstein, born February 5, 1887, had come from their birthplace of Zmigrod in Galicia via Berlin to Halberstadt after World War I. They had chosen Halberstadt because its Jewish community was Neo-Orthodox, meaning the Winter family, as observant Jews, would be able to live there according to the halakha without any problems. Saul Winter ran a door-to-door business selling home textiles. His wife Frida was a seamstress and made the necessary alterations to the pre-made goods at home. In the Jewish community, Saul’s responsibilities included ensuring that the milk and dairy products were processed in accordance with the halakha on the Siechenhof farm, which was run by the Nussbaum family. His daughter Judith/Ida, who now lives in Israel, recalls that the Jewish community had a special kosher stamp for the butter wrappers.
