In 1877 after an apprenticeship at Aron Hirsch & Sohn, Joseph Baer founded the metal trading company Samuel Baer und Söhne together with his brother Emil (1850 – 1920). The family residence and company premises were located at Bakenstrasse No. 28. The front building was residential, the rear and side buildings contained the metal warehouse, a smelter and office space. The family’s sukkah was located in a wing built in 1882 connecting the two buildings.Fanny (September 7, 1893 – 1983) was active in charitable work. In 1923, she married Hans Gustav Ollendorf, a lawyer from Breslau who was the managing director of the Central Board of Jewish Welfare in Germany from 1927 – 1934. The couple emigrated to Palestine/Israel in 1934, where they continued to be active in charitable work.Their son Ernst (January 18, 1890 – July 13, 1968), after completing training in metallurgy, joined the family business Samuel Baers Söhne. He later founded his own trading company in the same line of work. He emigrated to Palestine/Israel in 1933 with his first wife Elli, née Birnbaum, and their three children Liesel, Joseph and Hanna. Ernst Baer was also active in metal trading there. He remained connected to his native country, particularly the Harz mountains. In 1968 he traveled to Bad Lauterberg in the western Harz mountains with his son Hanania, born in 1943 to his second wife Hilde/Jehudith Wolff in order to be near his hometown of Halberstadt, now part of East Germany, where he died.
