Book Printer Meyer
Book Printer Meyer
In the mid-19th century, Fischl Hirsch founded a publishing house specializing in re-issuing out-of-print rabbinical literature. In 1861 he joined forces with the typesetter and printer Herz/Hermann Meyer (1810 – 1889), who was a member of one of the oldest Jewish families in Halberstadt. The printing house was first located at Domplatz No. 7, but after a few years moved to Düsterngraben No. 27. After Fischl Hirsch left the business to focus on dealing in rare Hebrew manuscripts, the publishing house H. Meyer’s Buchdruckerei (book pinters) was established. It specialized in printing forms, posters and address books as well as Hebrew prints and fulfilling orders for the Jewish community. Special notice should be given to Rabbi Benjamin Hirsch Auerbach’s History of the Israelite Community of Halberstadt, published in 1866. Starting in 1878, or 5638 according to the Jewish calendar, he published the Illustrated Jewish Family Calendar for several years.
