Abandonment for modernity
Eşrefpaşa Cd.
At the dawn of the 20th century, in accordance with the changing needs of a growing community, the Jews began moving to new neighbourhoods in the evolving and expanding parts of the city. This inner motion, and others towards abroad, created demographic changes in the first Juderia. Within decades it resulted in the total abandonment of the area as Jewish residential settlement. Due to all the damage and destruction caused by numerous natural disasters together with disuse and neglect over the years, today, in the first Juderia, the remaining are mainly several synagogues to be explored within this tour. Before wandering in the area, take a few moments to imagine this busy corner as a main vein of the once Jewish Quarter.
