Charity of the “Ciaves”
Bikur Holim Synagogue
In 1724, Salomon de Ciaves, a Portuguese originated Dutch immigrant to Izmir, donated one of his houses to the Jewish Community. The donation had the conditions of using the house as a synagogue and having a family member in the management. Additionally, he ensured the purchase of all the religious books and sacred objects required in the synagogue. Some of his houses and shops adjacent to the synagogue were also donated to the place to bring some revenue.
“Bikur Holim”, meaning visiting the sick in Hebrew, is an interesting name to call a synagogue. This name dated to the periods when the basement of the site was possibly used as a hospital during a plague or cholera epidemics, very frequently seen in the city before the 20th century.
