The aftermath
Portugal Synagogue
A number of Zevi’s followers kept up with him in converting to Islam. They started to be called as “Dönme” (meaning converted in Turkish). Acting as the truely faithful ones in public, they carried out Jewish rituals in secret. The largest community of this sect, formed in the Ottoman Empire, was in Salonika (today Thessaloniki in Greece). The descendants of the “Dönme”s are still named as Sabbataians. The movement started by Sabetay Zevi, has been noted as a significant occurrence affecting the Ottoman Empire and World Judaism. In Izmir, for example, the rabbis took serious measures in the aftermath. They banned anything else than the strict education of the Torah. In the decades to follow, this practice had stiff consequences, such as the ignorance and poverty of the Izmir Jewish community.
