Changing functions
Bet Hillel Synagogue
The site was a Yeshiva (theological school), where Rabbi Hayim Palachi and, later, his sons studied for years. The Bet Hillel Oratory (small praying house) was established by Rabbi Avraham Palachi in 1840, at a possible belonging of the family. Functioning as a school and an oratory at the same time for some decades, the place had been used as a prayer point until 1960s. The building was named as “Hillel”, after a philanthropist from Bucharest donating for publication of Rabbi Hayim Palachi’s books. Bet Hillel is the smallest of the remaining historic synagogues in the old Jewish quarter. Today, known also as Rabbi Hayim Palachi Memory House, it serves as a small museum exhibiting some Judaica objects.
