Tree of life
Etz Hayim Synagogue
“Etz Hayim”, meaning tree of life in Hebrew, perhaps is the most depicted symbol throughout ages. Based on an idea that this name was given to synagogues by Romaniot communities, a popular myth-fed story on the possible Byzantine foundation of this synagogue has been going around and around. However, up to present, no evidence has been found to support this prediction. The Etz Hayim Synagogue is known to be one of the six synagogues in Izmir that existed in 17th century. Surviving through the dangers of fire and earthquakes many times, this synagogue has been saved from a roof collapse in the 2000s. As a result of conservation project, the building has been re-opened for visits and cultural events in 2021.
