The confusion of multiplicity
Hevra (Talmud Torah) Synagogue
Jewish community’s changing needs or natural disasters forced frequent relocation of some institutions. In the first Juderia, some edifices were used for diverse functions under different names in varient times. These mostly were successive use at short intervals. This resulted in creating confusion in terms of transferring historical knowledge from generation to generation. Due to various utilizations, many would recall dissimilar origins, names and even a different address for some buildings or institutions.
Based on the history of a structure’s uses, many places in Izmir would be recognized with double names. Likewise, the synagogue known as “Hevra”, was also the Yeshiva of “Talmud Torah”. For centuries, it was also used like a main venue where some religious and social events took place, giving it a prestigious status. Similarly it has started to become a promising center for cultural activities of modern times.
